As a high-tech manufacturing and services company our business is based on continuous innovation.

Many of our products are bespoke to client requirements and so innovation is based on in-depth knowledge of customer needs. We work closely with our customers and our suppliers to develop distinctive new products.

Our products are mainly high-tech components, circuits or subsystems. Many have multiple uses and are sold into commercial markets as well as used in military equipment. They help improve the effectiveness of the equipment our customers make and use, and their applications can have far-reaching social and environmental benefits.

We do not condone any use of our products or services which may harm civilian lives or livelihoods. Some of or stakeholders have raised concerns about the potential use of our products in munitions such as mines and cluster bombs. We have a clear position on this issue and always comply with the strict regulations, laws and guidance of the countries we operate in.

For the majority of our products we focus on design, assembly and test with component manufacturing outsourced to the supply chain. Managing our supply chain including understanding provenance and impacts is therefore an important part of our business model. We have a Suppliers Code of Conduct including social and environmental expectations for our suppliers, to encourage them to address these impacts.

Our products usually have greater impacts outside the scope of our operations i.e., in our supply chain or when they are used.

Resource efficiency and recyclability is important in our product development process. We aim to align efforts with customer and other stakeholder expectations.

Aviation Services
We also provide a range of services, primarily related to aviation. The 5 year environmental strategy for our Aviation business outlines the environmental issues and management strategies the business is working towards to ensure impacts are mitigated and managed in a responsible manner. Actions are focussed on four areas:

  • Aviation fuel consumption
  • Electricity consumption
  • Water consumption
  • Waste generation

The majority of our GHG emissions originate from our aviation fuel consumption. As well as long term plans for fleet renewal our fuel efficiency programmes have included:

  • Using lightweight equipment such as cargo pallets, carpets and meal carts
  • Applying a 3 engine taxi,
  • Implementing a landing fuel reduction programme,
  • Utilising new flight planning software,
  • Reducing potable water loads,
  • Improving flight crew awareness through training.

We have set a fuel burn reduction target for our regional services and special mission business units which will be communicated through 2016.
