Cobham’s Integrated Space Solutions (ISS), located in Long Island, NY, is a leading supplier of products for space applications including motors, actuators, mechanisms and controllers. ISS provides space-rated solutions to all of the prime suppliers as well as NASA organizations and space customers abroad.

Cobham is seeking a Principal Project Engineer to design, develop, and test all aspects of complex and precise mechanical and electro-mechanical components and mechanisms for extreme environments such as space.  This Principal Project Engineer will apply strong knowledge of engineering principles to design products such as motors, actuators, slip rings, instruments, controls, and mechanisms.  The Principal Project Engineer must have experience with design for manufacturability and assembly (DFMA), Design To Unit Cost (DTUC) and other Lean design and manufacturing principles. The position holder may be involved in fabrication, operation, application, installation, and/or repair of mechanical and electro-mechanical products. 

This position reports to and works closely with the Chief Engineer and provides guidance and direction to a team of engineers, mechanical designers, assemblers, and technicians as well as working individually on certain projects.  The Principal Project Engineer must effectively interface with peers, other departments, suppliers, and customers as needed to support successful execution of projects and company objectives in a timely manner.  A wide range of creativity and self-direction is expected. 

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead Design & Development Projects. Responsible for achievement of technical, schedule, and cost requirements. Direct and supervise the work of other engineers, designers, and support personnel as assigned. Take ownership and responsibility for the product design through the entire product life cycle.
  • Conduct Product Design & Development. Interpret system specifications and reduce to mechanical and electro-mechanical design requirements. Create conceptual designs, assess risks, conduct design trade studies, and develop cost effective and reliable designs that meet the program requirements, including demanding space environmental requirements.
  • Perform Planning and Reporting. Formulate a design plan or work from technical objectives and overall schedules as specified by senior project staff. As Principal Project Engineer, responsible for achievement of schedule, fiscal and performance objectives on large to moderate size projects. Report technical and schedule progress at program reviews and internal/customer design reviews as required. Coordinate work activities with other groups.
  • Perform Trade Studies. Solve problems requiring a broad knowledge of thermal, structural, and/or aerodynamic principles. Develop comprehensive trade-studies and technical presentations that are reviewed by both senior program staff and external customers.
  • Direct Fabrication and Test of Hardware. Develop test plans and test procedures and direct the fabrication of fixtures, prototypes, and flight hardware. Conduct or direct sub-system and product-level mechanical and electro-mechanical testing to validate compliance to system requirements. Ensure manufacturability and reliability of designs.
  • Assure Complete Product Life Cycle Documentation. Perform documentation of the design with the support of design/drafting and manufacturing engineering. Conduct tolerance stack-up analyses and assure that tolerancing is documented correctly. Write or contribute to travellers and other work instructions as required. Participate in Root Cause Corrective Action investigations and document analyses and findings for presentations to internal and customer Failure Review Boards. Assure that corrective actions are properly implemented. Incorporate continuous improvements during product life cycle.
  • Support Proposal Development. Participate in the preparation of technical proposals. Use experience to baseline conceptual designs during the proposal effort.
  • Perform Other Duties. Assignments may include research and development of new techniques and materials as a result of independent study. Perform other duties and accept responsibilities as required.
Minimum Requirements:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Systems Engineering or other related technical degree
  • Direct involvement in space or aerospace, military or automotive  related engineering activities
  • Minimum of ten (10) years’  work experience in the design of mechanical and/or electro-mechanical products
  • Must be familiar with motion control concepts, practices, and procedures
  • Must have extensive knowledge of materials, manufacturing, and testing practices and processes
  • Strong proficiency in PTC CREO, Solidworks or similar CAD platforms
  • Experience with preparing and presenting technical reports and design reviews required
  • Experience with Microsoft Office tools required
Preferred Requirements:
  • Master’s Degree in Engineering or Physics preferred
  • Prior experience with PTC CREO Simulate, ANSYS, and/or NASTRAN Finite Element Analysis tools is preferred
  • Experience participating in proposal generation preferred
  • Experience interfacing directly with customers preferred
