Job Description

Cobham is seeking a Director, Continuous Improvement (CI) in Lansdale, PA. Reports directly to the Electronic Warfare and Integrated Solutions Business Area Vice President and General Manager of the Cobham Lansdale business and is a member of the leadership team, executing the business strategy, developing strong customer relationships and driving operational excellence.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for identifying Continuous Improvement (CI) initiatives through the disciplined use of measurements, accountability, analysis, and standardization in order to improve business process maturity.
  • Identify and improve process maturity and process capability across the business. This will include key functional and administrative processes that could benefit from the application of CI methodologies.
  • Plan, manage and mentors the activities of stakeholders who are involved in a particular initiative by bringing expertise (or identifying subject matter experts) in support of multi-functional efforts focused on: process improvement; data capture and analysis; infrastructure; tools / systems / methods; ownership; and compliance with procedures / instructions / processes. Focused on the BA’s critical business processes, leveraging value adding activities and removing waste from the environment.
  • Advise business groups by providing strategic direction to initiative prioritization, integration and resource application, thereby ensuring that CI efforts are coordinated and align with the business and Cobham strategic objectives. 
  • Directly manage site-based Continuous Improvement Team and programs, fostering continuous growth and performance improvement, by identifying and leading Continuous Improvement initiatives.
  • The efforts of the Lead and the CI function will be to achieve cost reductions, working capital improvements, cycle time reductions and quality improvements, influencing company growth by increasing market opportunities, and ensuring capabilities and performance meet or exceed industry and customer requirements. This will be accomplished by active performance management and analysis of established Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) for all business functions.
  • Direct the efforts of, or personally lead, Root Cause Corrective Actions (RCCA), Kaizen events and or A3 projects through a disciplined process resulting in improvement to performance metrics.
  • Collaborate closely with Site Leadership team and the CAES CI Director to implement goals that align with strategy and effectively utilize the company’s formal
  • Performance Management process, translating strategic goals into individual measurable goals. These goals will need to be coordinated cross-locations, leveraging best practices and lessons learned.
  • Partner with established corporate project teams to ensure effective execution of Business initiatives, with active participation expected. Teaming with relevant functions can be expected to have direct effect on on-time delivery of products so to meet cost, schedule and performance goals. 
  • Approaches can include: Lean manufacturing techniques; Single Piece Flow, 5S, standardized workvalue stream mapping, KANBAN, pull systems, etc. And will require coordinating the consistent implementation of Lean Six Sigma across Cobham.
  • Fosters and nurtures continuous improvement tools and techniques by leveraging internal talent, building bench strength with a robust training program and enabling practical application of knowledge base.

Administrative/Leadership:

  • Managing human resources: Having the right people in the right roles, Insuring performance management is practiced effectively by their teams, Insure that staffing and development plans support succession plans and protects against impacts of turnover
  • Managing capital assets: Insuring that capital supports required capacity, Build, direct and retain a team responsible for the assuring the quality, manufacturability of components and subsystems for the Defense market
  • Managing financial assets: Develop budget, Establish controls to insure budget compliance, Support new product bid and proposal efforts for the sites

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in business or a technical field
  • 10-12 years of experience with LEAN, Six Sigma and expertise in Lean Six Sigma methodologies as described under the responsibilities
  • 10-12 years of people leadership experience
  • 5+ years of experience leading and managing continuous improvement teams in an operational environment. Experience necessary in leading CI in both administrative and manufacturing environments.
  • Fluency in CI methodologies, especially strong practical Lean deployment experience
  • Ability to produce evidence of successful results from prior CI work experience
  • US Citizenship required for eligibility to obtain/maintain a security clearance

  • Strong leadership skills with experience presenting to and interacting with senior and executive leadership teams
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to influence, communicate, motivate and persuade; leading multi-functional teams in problem solving
  • Goal oriented with the ability to balance tasks and team/individual needs to achieve the right outcomes
  • Proven leader and utilizes coaching style that has effectively built high performance teams
  • Active DoD Secret level Clearance preferred
