Cobham Mission Systems are recruiting for an Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) and Lightning Engineer to join our Test and Environmental Engineering group who are responsible for functional and environmental development and qualification activities to support integrated project teams (IPTs). This may involve tasks across either of the main business areas of Air to Air Refueling and Weapons Carriage and Release.
The EMC and Lightning Engineer will support both platform and equipment level engineering teams, by contributing to requirements, influencing design to incorporate good EMC/Lightning practice, also planning verification methods, as well as planning, executing, interpreting and reporting on test and analysis activities to show compliance to relevant EMC requirements and standards. The successful candidate will be expected to follow current departmental process and will be encouraged to participate in the further development of these processes. The position is based and the majority of the work will be carried out at Cobham Mission Systems’ purpose built engineering facility in Wimborne, Dorset. Occasional (infrequent) travel may be required to support the progression of tasks at external test facilities.
This role is ideally suited to someone with experience working within the EMC and Lightning field in the Aerospace industry, who is willing to drive EMC design and qualification activities across multiple projects for the organisation. It is anticipated that the successful candidate will progress to become an EMC Technical Specialist for the business.
As an EMC Engineer your skills and qualifications will ideally include:Relevant degree or a recognised engineering apprenticeship and HNC/HND.Experience of development engineering activities.Experience in defining and executing EMC qualification plans and producing technical documentation to support qualification. Experience defining and commissioning test setups and performing environmental and functional testing at component and system levels.Knowledge of EMC standards (e.g. RTCA DO160, MIL-STD-461, MIL-STD-464, Def Stan 59-411, SAR ARP 5412/5414/5416, plus ideally the proprietary EMC standards of aerospace primes etc.).
As an EMC Engineer your main responsibilities will involve:Assessment of customer EMC/Lightning requirements and subsequent development of internal/supplier system and equipment requirements.Contribution to design, to ensure that EMC and lightning are considered appropriately (e.g. enclosure design, wiring, layout, protection devices, bonding/grounding schemes etc.).Composition of test plans and procedures to gather development data or qualification evidence.Carrying out EMC and lightning tests.Reporting test results and analyse implications to compliance and safety.Assessing the potential EMC impact of design changes.Peer review of technical documentation.Customer and supplier facing responsibilities to discuss and agree qualification plans and activities.Review of equipment qualification data from suppliers.
