Cobham provides turn-key airborne surveillance operations to the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service.

To provide this special mission capability, Cobham engineers modified ten Bombardier Dash 8 aircraft, combining new-generation surveillance sensors and advanced satellite communications systems with highly-reliable, long-range aircraft.  Each aircraft is a live link in a national data communications chain that generates an unprecedented stream of timely, high-quality surveillance information to enable informed border security decisions in real time.

Cobham was responsible for the system integration to the platforms. The system development, completely designed at Cobham's Adelaide facilities, commenced with equipment evaluation to ensure sensor technical compliance and performance, reliability and through life support that was required to provide above the performance criteria of the contract. In addition, a consultative process with the sensor operators was undertaken to provide a functional workspace within the aircraft improving the communication of the crew.

Cobham continues to monitor improvements in sensor and platform technology and conducts system developments forums with the Australian Customs and Border Protection Service on a regular basis. System improvements have been driven through this process with the recent inclusion of the Dash 8 air operable door, providing in-flight dispatch of rescue equipment.
