The latest version of Cobham's multiphysics simulation software suite, Opera 18, includes many significant new capabilities, and enhancements in both speed and ease-of-use.




Version 18 of Opera introduces the following significant new features:


  1. The Winding Tool
  2. Modeller Analysis Setup Tool
  3. Transient SIBC
  4. ACIS R25
  5. Documentation Update
  6. Additional Support Knowledgebase (ASK) extension


The Winding Tool


The Winding Tool is a new analytical tool that is a separately licensed option which is available both within Opera-2d/PP and Opera-3d/Modeller.


The Winding Tool is dedicated to electrical machine design within Opera FEA software. The main purpose of this tool is to help users assess feasibility and optimality of different winding configurations.


The Winding Tool will provide users with the following output:


  1. Optimal winding layout (circular and linear representation)
  2. Stars of Slots representation
  3. Winding factor harmonics
  4. Winding mmf harmonics
  5. GÖrges Diagram


Modeller Analysis Setup Tool


A new graphical tool has been included in the Opera 3d/Modeller to prepare data for analysis. The Analysis Setup Tool provides an interface to the ANALYSISDATA, DBCASEDATA and MULTIPHYSICS commands to prepare a single analysis, or sequence of analyses as part of a multiphysics analysis.


Transient SIBC


The Surface Impedance Boundary Condition (SIBC) which was introduced in Opera-3d Steady-State EM analysis in version 14 is now available in Transient EM analysis, including Demagnetization and Motional Analysis. SIBC simplifies the modelling of materials with very small skin depths compared to the size of the model. It avoids the need to create very small elements on the surfaces of such materials.




The geometric modelling software used in Opera-3d/Modeller has been upgraded to the latest release, ACIS R25. This provides additional interoperability with other CAD formats and updates the surface mesh generator.




The new release of ACIS allows import and export of a wider range of CAD data formats than before on both Windows and Linux systems. Apart from SAT and IGES - SAT is the native format of the ACIS modeller and IGES is included in the Opera-3d/Modeller license - these are separately licensed options.


User Interface


Tabbed Menu Interface Shortcuts


The Tabbed Menu Interface (TMI) can be used with keyboard shortcuts which have been defined for some of the more commonly used functions. The full set of shortcuts are available in the New Features document.




2D Machines Environment


Skewing - Skewing can now be applied to all the analyses and for any machine type. The Opera-2d/PP GAP command is used to prepare the data, specifying the number of slices and the skewing angle for each section of the machine.

3D Machines Environment


 Torque vs. Speed Analysis - A new analysis has been added that evaluates the torque vs. speed profile of permanent magnet and synchronous reluctance machines. The existing analysis for Induction Machines has been extended to capture the complete torque characteristic of an Induction Machine.


Iron Loss calculations for SRMs - The existing iron loss calculations for synchronous machines have been adapted for SRMs in order to accurately account for losses in the machine.


Documentation Update


The Reference Manuals have been updated to give details of the new commands and options within the software.
