If aircrew members are unconscious or injured, they cannot manually disconnect their parachutes. The parachute will act as a sail and drag the aircrew member across the water. The aircrew may become entangled in the shroud lines. The parachute will fill with water and become a sea anchor, pulling the crew member under. Water activated parachute releases save lives.
