Computer Simulation and Modelling

The current pulse which flows during a lightning strike generates fast changing local magnetic fields. These fields generate induced voltage and current transients in nearby wiring which can cause damage or disruption to the electrical equipment linked to it. Our extensive test facilities are supplemented by bespoke software tools developed by Lightning Testing and Consultancy such as the INDCAL program. This is a 2D program ideally suited to solving current distribution and induced voltage problems in complex structures such as aircraft fuselages and wings.

The INDCAL software is a powerful 2D tool for the prediction of induced transients and has been used in assessing aircraft for induced effects protection. These results are used for design or certification by allowing the transients induced in wiring to be compared to the transient design levels of the equipment. This can be used to confirm the adequacy of the equipment's protection level. Using INDCAL and our wide experience of lightning effects, we help manufacturers design optimum and cost-effective lightning protection into electrical installations. We also have a 3D time domain code named ELECTRA.

Within the aerospace sector, this approach has been used world-wide for the design of avionics installations and in support of their airworthiness certification. The INDCAL code has been extensively validated by experiments carried out by Lightning Testing and Consultancy on a variety of composite and metallic material test beds.
