RF Systems

Cobham Technical Services has extensive RF system design skills. This capability enables us to design bespoke solutions when a specialised component is not commercially available.

Typical RF system design projects are wide and varied, ranging from the design of a modern digital communication and navigation radio for light and commercial aircraft to the design of a short range personal role radio capable of ad hoc networking for military applications.

All of these projects involved a manufacturing partner at an early stage to minimise any issue in transferring the design solution into production. In addition, Cobham Technical Services uses rapid prototyping techniques to produce a pre-production demonstration system that closely resembles the final product.

Modern wireless communication systems require design expertise in not only the RF and IF bands, but also in digital signal processing. Cobham Technical Services has the combination of RF, analogue and digital hardware design skills required together with embedded software skills to achieve the required functionality.

Cobham Technical Services has developed a multi-channel interference cancellation system operating in the 30 – 512 MHz frequency band for use by fixed and mobile land and airborne platforms. Cobham also recently designed an 8-channel interference cancellation system for the US coastguard, which is being installed in fixed coastal sites as part of the Rescue 21 system upgrade programme.

Cobham Technical Services has also designed a Digital Antenna Control Unit (DACU), which is an intelligent combiner of GPS signals received from multiple antennas to improve the noise performance in the presence of jamming signals. This project is based on digitally adaptive array antennas and involves highly complex and fast digital processing utilising multiple processing units.
