Interference Cancellation

 

Cobham Technical Services has developed solutions to interference generated by both co-located transmitters and remote jamming devices.


Protection from high-power co-sited transmitters in the VHF/UHF bands is provided by advanced state-of-the art cancellation systems based around Cobham's mINCAN technology. These systems offer high levels of interference cancellation and extremely short convergence times to ensure that radio front ends are not de-sensitised and the receivers remain “on-the-air” in a variety of highly stressed environments. This proven mINCAN technology is deployed across a number of military, airborne and commercial applications including coastal monitoring stations and blue-force communications.


In other applications, such as GPS navigation, advanced digital-adaptive array processing algorithms are implemented to provide protection from interference. Spatial Time Adaptive Processing (STAP) is used to generate broadband nulls in the direction of noise jammers and frequency domain excision filtering is applied to remove narrowband interference. More advanced algorithms also are applied to incorporate beam steering and direction finding in the system. However, emphasis is generally given to maximising interference protection (in terms of null depth and speed of adaptation) whilst meeting stringent size, power and cost constraints.
