Communications and Navigation

Cobham Technical Services develops advanced technologies and products to support radio communications and navigation. This includes radio systems and sub-systems operating in the HF, VHF and UHF bands, as well as equipment for higher frequency (L-band and S-band) line-of-sight links and wireless networks. In the HF band, we have integrated and optimised a vehicle-mounted system for Near Vertical Incidence Sky-wave (NVIS) operation, compatible with Commercial-Off-The-Shelf (COTS) radio systems, based an auto-tuned half-loop antenna and a digital control/calibration unit.

Cobham has applied advanced digital adaptive array processing algorithms to provide protection from GPS interference and jamming. Spatial Time Adaptive Processing (STAP) has been applied to generate broadband nulls in the direction of jammer noise sources, where frequency domain excision filtering is applied to remove narrowband interference. Multi-functional capability is offered through integration of advanced algorithms for beam-steering and direction-finding (to maximise the protection), whilst meeting stringent power budgets.

By combining our state-of-the-art adaptive processing systems with patented ultra-compact Controlled Reception Pattern Antenna (CRPA) technology, Cobham Technical Services is able to offer smaller and lighter solutions extending the range of platforms which can be provided with vital protection. We are also playing a leading role in Galileo, the new European satellite navigation system, which is at the forefront of technological and standards definition, through its research into multi-standard antennas.

Cobham is leading a multi-million pound collaborative research project investigating next generation communications, navigation and surveillance (CNS) antenna technologies. This will develop the next generation of broadband, multifunctional and conformal antennas based on advanced materials.
